When the Self No Longer Occupies Life
We spend much of our lives
filling every empty place.
Few of us notice
how little space
is left
for life itself.
I. Nothing Is Wrong with the World
The eyes receive light.
The ears receive sound.
The body receives warmth,
cold,
movement,
and stillness.
The world continues
to appear.
Nothing has gone wrong.
Nothing needs to stop.
What changes
is what happens afterward.
A thought says,
“This is happening to me.”
A memory answers,
“I have felt this before.”
Quietly,
a self begins to gather.
II. How Space Disappears
No one decides
to become a self.
It happens gently.
A name is remembered.
A success is kept.
A wound refuses to leave.
A fear asks for tomorrow.
Every experience
asks to stay.
Little by little,
nothing is left untouched.
Not because life has closed,
but because the self
has left no room.
III. What Never Needed Repair
We often imagine
that awakening
must change life.
That thoughts
should disappear.
That emotions
should become pure.
That the world
should finally become quiet.
Yet flowers
have never disturbed awareness.
Nor has rain.
Nor the beating
of the heart.
Life
has never asked
to become complete.
Only the self has.
IV. Observation Leaves Space
Observation
follows memory.
It follows fear.
It follows desire.
Wherever it settles,
a self appears.
Wherever it lets go,
space returns.
Nothing new
has been created.
Nothing hidden
has been uncovered.
Only the filling
has come to rest.
V. A Mind That Dwells Nowhere
The Diamond Sutra says:
Give rise to a mind that dwells nowhere.
Not because life
should be abandoned.
Not because thought
is an enemy.
But because
a mind that dwells nowhere
no longer builds
a home
inside what passes.
Thought comes.
Emotion comes.
The seasons change.
People arrive.
People leave.
Nothing is denied.
Nothing is held.
VI. The Space That Remains
Life
was never crowded.
Only the self
kept filling it.
The flowers bloom.
The wind moves.
Morning becomes evening.
Nothing announces
that truth has arrived.
Nothing declares
that awakening has occurred.
Stop filling.
The space
has always been here.
And in that space,
life
reveals itself.
